How do I choose a doula?

There as so many really good doulas out there.
Some have lots of other services they provide too, like vaginal steaming therapy and breast feeding consultancy.

But there are a few important questions that need to be asked so that you can find the right person to support you, as well as your family.

  1. What do you want from your doula? Would you like them to attend midwife appointments with you? Postnatal visits? When you know exactly what you want it helps you begin to slowly choose a specific type of doula.
  2. Ask friends and family to suggest any Doulas they may have used before.
  3. Certified or uncertified? There are still quite a few doulas out there who haven’t trained with a certified doula company. Now I certainly believe that being an uncertified doula does not mean that a is in any way less qualified than a certified doula. It’s really up to you, the client. Whoever you feel more comfortable with is the one you should go with, certified or not.

Now it’s important to remember that once you have asked yourself these 3 questions the rest is all up to your emotions and the vibes you get from the doulas you meet. Meet as many as you need, there’s no fixed amount. Keep searching untill you find someone your heart settles with. Remember that this person will be there with you during one of the most vulnerable times in you and your families life.

Most doulas will provide consultations usually somewhere that’s not too far from both of you. You’ll have a chat and really see if they’re what you’re looking for.

Don’t feel bad if the doula you see isn’t quite ticking your emotional boxes just because she ticks all the outer ones. OK, she might be a birth doula, live in your area and even provides vaginal steaming therapy for her postpartum clients but if you just aren’t feeling the connection keep looking.

Not only will you cause yourself unnecessary discomfort when it comes to labour, but you will also be jepordising her work too as a doula’s job is to work for you on an emotional level as well as mentally and physically.

And most importantly, enjoy the process. The doula you choose will most probably be the one to attend more than one of your births. Enjoy getting to know them. Trust your instincts.
